Now I remember what I didn't like about St. Louis. The sweltering heat. I mean SWELTERING!!!! I took my car to get maintenance this morning. While I was waiting, I read a little from James Baldwin's THE FIRE NEXT TIME. Then, I decided to take a morning stroll for coffee. It was 8:30 AM. By the time I walked down the street I felt like I couldn't breathe! You see, in St. Louis, it's not the actual heat that gets you, but the humidity. The air you breathe in feel thick. Feels like you actually could cut it with a knife. And it feel like the air is pushing your shoulders down. You feel heavy and it makes you drag. Then, after a few minutes outside, your clothes start sticking to you. No matter what you wear: shorts, tank tops, whatever. It sticks to you. And like I said, this was the early morning. Way before the sun has had a chance to dig in and get settled up there.

In Cleveland, the spring and summer seasons were so short that I thought I missed the warm St. Louis weather. It wouldn't begin to warm up until June and sometimes it would snow by the end of September. I thought it was funny when the temperature would get up to about 80 degrees and everybody there was screaming heat wave! LOL They didn't know what a heat wave was! St. Louis sees 90 plus degrees often, and 100 plus degrees ocassionally. But it's not the high temperatures, it's the humidity that has you feeling like you're having an asthma attack.

And wouldn't you know? The auto technician couldn't find out what was wrong with my A/C, so he suggested that I take it to the dealer. So you know what that means. I'm about to get screwed. They know I need A/C and they're going to make me pay for it dearly, no matter what the problem is.

Sigh

St. Louis sounds just like Houston - except I'm now used to the hot and humid summers. And you gotta have A/C unfortunately. You'll perish without it, and those auto repair folks know that. :(

Maybe you need freon? (I can't spell that word). Or maybe a belt should be replaced?

Hey Cydney,
Yeah, you're right! I've been to Houston before. Back in college. But I do remember it being hot and heavy. It's a midwest thang. Gotta love it, huh? :-)

And no, that's what we thought. That I needed freon but there's freon in it. Apparently, there's some signal that's not working. It's an electrical problem. Electrical problem + dealer = Arm & Leg

Ack, hugs on the a/c repairs. And yep, it is a terrible time to go for a/c repairs. They are just waiting to snatch us into their web when they know it's so hot we can't stand it!!!

Weather is so relative. People complain about different conditions everywhere. I moved from NY to Florida and I love it here. Humidity and all. The big difference is that EVERYTHING is air conditioned. As long as I don't have to work outside, I just don't care how hot it is.I know I hate snow and I feel cold now under 70 degrees. Since I chose to live in this place it's pretty counterproductive to complain about the weather so I just don't go there. I wrote a song called Frozen Shadows that is about the weather where I used to live. I co-wrote one called Cruel in Utah but it was through the eyes of my co-writer who lives there. So it can be inspiring from a writer's point of view but I just don't waste energy complaining about it.

Hey Bud,

Thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you're enjoying my blog. And that's cool when you take a situation and do something creative with it, like write a story or a song! I do that as well. In my first novel I have a lot of different experiences written into the book. You're right, we'll always find something to complain about. LOL In the winter (which I don't like either), we'll complain about the snow and cold. When it's raining, we'll complain about dreary weather and when it dry, we complain about a drought. And so it goes with temperature. Guess we're never really satisfied.

Hope you come back!

When I lived in Los Angeles I was known to get extremely cranky (read bitchy) if the a/c was down. GOTTA have a/c. Hope you get it fixed soon.
